Historical walking tour of
Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Details of the tour

Welcome to our 2-hour walking tour of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a charming coastal town nestled in the Bay of Biscay (Golfe de Gascogne for the French), in the Labour province of the Northern Basque Country. This tour will take you through the town's rich history, stunning architecture, and picturesque landscapes and seascapes.

Introduction to Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Step into the past as we unveil the secrets of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Donibane Lohizune in Basque) and reveal the origins of the town's name. Our tour begins with an engaging introduction to the area's history, culture, and significance within the Labourd province of the Basque Country.

Church of Saint-John the Baptist

Our journey through the town begins at the magnificent Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church, a jewel of Basque Baroque architecture. Originally medieval, and rebuilt in the 17th century, this church is not only a testament to the town's religious heritage but also showcases intricate craftsmanship and stunning interior decor. Marvel at its elegant façade and step inside to admire its ornate altar and beautiful stained glass windows. You will also learn about local traditions and a major historical event that took place here.

Place Louis XIV

After a short stroll the busy shopping street Rue Gambetta, we'll make our way to the iconic Place Louis XIV, named after the legendary Sun King himself who frequented this area during his reign for a very special event. This charming square exudes old-world charm with its traditional buildings, quaint cafes, and bustling atmosphere.

Don't forget to come back here later to take a moment to soak in the ambiance and perhaps indulge in some people-watching while sipping on a café au lait.

The Fishing Harbour

Next, we'll head towards the bustling fishing harbor, where the heart of Saint-Jean-de-Luz beats. Watch as colorful fishing boats bob gently in the harbor, and listen to the sounds of seagulls overhead. Learn about the town's rich maritime history and the importance of fishing in sustaining its economy. Here stories of whalers and privateers intertwine with today's fishing and leisure activities.

The Beach Front

Our tour concludes with a leisurely stroll along the scenic beachfront promenade. Feel the sea breeze while we enjoy the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean stretching out before us. We will admire the charming coastal architecture lining the waterfront and learn about the evolution of the bay up to its more recent history of seaside resort.

As our 2-hour guided tour comes to an end, your guide will be pleased to provide further recommendations for your Basque adventure.
